Animal New Horizons is a social simulation game. It was one of the most popular releases for the year 2020, since it lined up with COVID 19 and everyone was stuck at home.
This game is from the beloved Nintendo Animal Crossing franchise; this is the latest installation from 2020. There are five main animal crossing games in the franchise and three spin-off games.
The game is about moving to an island and creating a dream life for yourself, the perfect getaway. You can explore your island and travel to other islands. You live alongside villagers, and you can socialize with them. You can decorate your island, upgrade buildings, add structures, etc. You can play with friends and visit their island or show them around your island.
The time system and the season system
game, some features will be locked because of the time zone. For example, in the morning to midday, a shop will be open, and the sky will be bright. But heading up to later times and the shop will be closed to the next in real life day. This may annoy some players, but it really gets gamers to slow down and perhaps do something else.
When you first play on your new island, it will ask you what side of the earth you are on. This will determine what time of the year the map may change the season.

Villagers
When you first arrive on your island, there will be three different villagers that will move in with you. They can move out, and you have the ability to travel to other islands to search for new ones to invite to your island or a random one will be selected. There isn’t a rarity system in place, but some are harder to obtain because some require amiibo cards, which are becoming rare for this game. There are 413 villagers altogether, and you can only have a maximum of ten at a time on your island.
Species. There are 35 different species in the game. Some include cats, dogs, bears, rabbits, frogs, etc.
Personality:
Each villager has their own personality. Each personality has its own distinct dialogue, interests and behaviours. There are 8 different personalities that they could have. The male villagers’ personalities are:
- Lazy
- Jock
- Cranky
- Smug
The female villager personalities are:
- Sisterly
- Snooty
- Normal
- Peppy
Catchphrase:
Depending on what villagers you interact with, each one has their own unique catchphrase. An example of this is

DLC packs
Happy Home Paradise
This DLC pack adds a new game mode and a new island. In this mode, you design homes for clients and decorate gardens for them. The DLC pack is included with the Nintendo Switch online expansion pack. Or can be purchased separately for 25 euros.

Music
The music is very calming; it fits well in the game. There are several soundtracks throughout the game for different events. All the music is instrumental, except for a few in which a dog, K.K. Slider sings it. None of the music or audio is in English, it’s in its own made-up language.
Rating
Out of ten I would give this game a 7 out of 10. The game doesn’t get frequent updates anymore for a game that came out in 2019 that was one of the biggest ones during COVID. You’d think they’d continue updating it. Though for the first time in years, it will be receiving a new update for both Switch 1 and 2.
This game lacks features; this game needs more content in it. Seasonal events are great, but new things to do would satisfy the fan base. Another game in the franchise has been talking for a while, but there are no updates from Nintendo. Hopefully Switch 2 will have one available in a few years.
